Options on Futures: Candlestick charting

Western style charting or open-high-low-close bar charting can be combined with candlestick charting to embellish the technical possibilities of true analysis. This is because the wick or shadow of the candles are the bars on a bar chart, the only visual difference is the “real body” or the fat part of the bar which represents the difference between the open and close prices of that time frame.

One of the big advantages of using candles is that it is very visual. The size and colour of the “real body” can transmit a great deal of information in a flash. Here are a few examples.

• A long white/green body indicates that the bulls are in control
• Likewise, a long black/red body shows that the bears are in command
• A small body of either colour indicates a neutral pull and can forewarn of a possibly turning point for the
   timeframe being analysed.
• A doji is a candle with equal wick from the open and close and no real body.

To review, a candle is made up of four important components.

• High price: this is represented by the top of the wick or shadow or the top of the “real body” whichever is higher.
• Low Price: this is represented by the lowest part of the wick or “real body” whichever is lower.
• Opening price: this is usually represented by the highest or lowest part of the real body which may also be
equal to the high or low of the day.
• Closing Price: this is usually represented by the highest or lowest part of the real body and may be equal to the
top or bottom of the wick.

Remember, if the real body is green or white, the opening is the lowest part of the wick because the body indicates a bullish move meaning it closed higher than the opening. Likewise, if the real body is black or red it means that the closing was lower than the opening indicated by the red or black body. •

Grains Innovation Fund: call for proposals

Grain Farmers of Ontario’s Market Development team issued a call for proposals for the Grains Innovation Fund on September 13th. The Grains Innovation Fund provides funding to support the development of products and processes which have the potential to expand the market for Ontario barley, corn, oats, soybeans, and wheat crops and crop residues. In order to be eligible for funding, projects must demonstrate that they will have direct impact on our farmer-members or generate a positive return on investment for the grains industry as a whole. Projects that satisfy the eligibility criteria can receive up to 60% of the cost of their project up to a maximum of $50,000.
Applications will be accepted until October 24, 2016 at 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.gfo.ca/marketdevelopment or contact Mangla Shandal, market development coordinator at mshandal@gfo.ca or 1-800-265-0550 ext. 201. •

Canada's Outdoor Farm Show

Thank you to all of our farmer-members who stopped by our booth at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show this week. It was a great opportunity for staff and directors to hear about your concerns with the weather and variable crop conditions this year, discuss future plans of the organization, and update farmer-members on the Good in Every Grain campaign. Thank you as well to Toby Barrett, MPP for Haldimand Norfolk, who stopped by to say hello and update us on some current happenings within the Ontario legislature.

Tony Balkwill, Grain Farmers of Ontario’s sponsored Nuffield Scholar joined us at our booth on Tuesday and Wednesday to answer questions about his research. For more information, check out this week’s edition of Inside Grain Farmers of Ontario. •

Promoting Ontario grains

The Good in Every Grain campaign is in the spotlight this week with a tv appearance and video taping. Laura Ferrier, communications coordinator, appeared on CHCH to talk about this year’s grain crop and the effect of the weather. Dietician Lisa Mardlin Vandewalle taped three different recipes featuring Ontario grains for Good in Every Grain’s ‘From Combine to Kitchen’ series.
